What is Oral B Satin Tape used for and why do I need it?
When you wash your car you don’t forget to clean the wheels, so when you clean your teeth why should you neglect the spaces between them? Oral B Satin Tape is for cleaning between your teeth and this action is called flossing. Flossing was invented in 1888 by BT Mason who wrapped some material round a toothpick and called it a “combination toothpick”. Modern flossing hasn’t really changed much at all and the principal is the same.
Flossing basically removes food stuck between your teeth and the film of bacteria that may have developed there, before it is able to harden into plaque. Your toothbrush is unable to reach between all your teeth, and when you don’t floss millions of bacteria take up residence between your teeth and your gums start bleeding.
Dental floss is made up of bundles of plastic ribbon which you insert in between your teeth and removes plaque in between the teeth and under the gumline. The American Dental Association recommends that you floss at least once a day and it should be an integral part of your dental health regime.
Benefits of flossing
In a nutshell flossing prevents gum disease and bad breath. It reduces gingivitis which is the build-up of tartar that will make your gums red and swollen in time, and if left untreated will spread below the gumline leading to periodontitis.
It will also reduce cavities occurring, prevent you from losing your teeth and needing root canal work, and of course, it will also keep down your dental bills.
How to floss
There are various tools available to assist you in your battle against plaque from interproximal brushes and floss holders. However, one of the easiest ways is with a dental floss such as the Oral B Satin Tape. This is a smooth tape which suits most mouths, and will also be good if you haven’t got much space between your teeth. It has a minty taste to it too, and will leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh.
You may get a little bit of bleeding and if so don’t be alarmed. You may have some gum disease that has already formed and flossing is the best thing you can do for it, so persevere and after a week or so the bleeding will stop!
Here’s what you do:
- Wash your hands, and then break off about 18 inches of floss. Wind one end round the finger of one hand and the other end round the finger of the other hand.
- Insert it between your teeth and form a “C” shape with the floss around your tooth.
- Move it gently up and down against your teeth and under the gum line.
- Move systematically round your mouth, inserting the floss between the teeth in turn.
It’s all too easy not to make time to floss, but like everything you need to get into the habit of making time every day. At the end of the day your mouth will feel fresher, will be more healthy and less trips to the dentist will mean it’s going to be easier on your pocket. Oral B Satin Tape floss won’t break the bank either, for a twin-pack of 100m it’s less than $5.00.
